Camp Clog 2021

Fri 13 – Sun 15 August 2021
Middleton-by-Wirksworth,Derbyshire.

Jen Cox and I have hatched a plan for the first ever (and hopefully not the last) Camp Clog! We’re welcoming musicians interested in playing for step dance, and step and step clog dancers to spend some time together and see what happens. We’ll probably organise a few things to give a bit of structure but the idea is to get together, play music, dance, share steps etc. and generally have a good time. Although there will be chances to brush up steps and learn some new things we’re not planning a full-on Wallopers style offering of whole weekend workshops, nor dancing around a local town á la Clogfest. Think sociable, sharing and fun.

We have exclusive use of a small campsite in the Derbyshire Dales and a nearby venue with lots of covered (and uncovered) outside space. The cost of camping is £7.50 per person per night, there is also a glamping tent at £150 for the weekend (please let us know ASAP if you want to book the glamping tent). Tents and campervans are permitted, the site is not suitable for large motorhomes (if unsure please get in contact). Partners etc. who would like to come and join us for the camping only are welcome there is plenty of good walking, and places to visit in the area. If you don’t want to camp there are many holiday lets in the area but be warned they are extremely heavily booked this year.

We anticipate that ,apart from camping (and your own budget for food/drink/transport/etc.), the costs for full participants will be minimal and will likely be less than £15 per head. We are considering some catering possibilities for the daytimes which would be extra.

If you are interested please email Toby at tobyclog@gmail.com. Please also state whether you are a musician or a dancer (style/s of dance would be useful too). Let us know if you would like to book the glamping tent. It’s first come first served. We are limiting the numbers and the event is likely to fill up.

COVID

In the interests of Covid safety we intend to conduct the majority of activities in outside spaces. This means they might not have all the creature comforts, but we figured safety is more important.

It goes without saying that if you have Covid symptoms, a positive Covid test or are self-isolating you will not be able to attend.

CHILDREN

Although people of all ages are welcome there would be no opportunity for supervision of children outside your family.

DOGS

Dogs are welcome but they must be kept on leads at all times in the campsite or the daytime venue.

LOCATION

  • Middleton(-by-Wirksworth), a village just to the north of the town of Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Dales on the edge of the Peak District, about 15 miles north of Derby. https://goo.gl/maps/EtAPDi5BT6hSWhug8.

  • Middleton is a beautiful former mining/quarrying village with a good community feel. Wirksworth is a small market town (also beautiful!) with a vibrant, arty community, local shops and some good pubs!

TRANSPORT

  • Train: The nearest station is Cromford (on a branch line from Derby) about two miles from the campsite – there is a very steep hill so be warned if you plan to walk or cycle up, we’ll try to sort out lifts if necessary.
  • Bus: There is a bus from Derby approximately hourly (Trent Barton 6.1) but please check timetables especially for the Sunday https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/services/sixes.
  • Road: look at Google Maps, nearest motorway is M1. https://goo.gl/maps/J3Rzs8T4mYsWACRU7.

MIDDLETON TOP CAMPSITE

  • This is a lovely, small site right next to the High Peak Trail.

  • There is a variable slope over the site so completely flat pitches are not really available.

  • Tents or campervans £7.50 per person per night. N.B. the site is not suitable for large motorhomes (if unsure please get in contact).

  • Glamping tent available (double bed etc….) for £150 for the weekend.

  • Dogs are permitted but must be kept on leads at all times.

  • On-site facilities include shower, toilets and washing up.

  • A large, 6m x 6m gazebo is available for our use (perhaps a second one as well).

  • The nearest shop is a medium sized Co-op about a mile away.

  • The nearest pub is the Rising Sun, a few mins walk away (does food). The Nelson Arms is a very folk-friendly pub about 15 mins walk away.

  • Arrival and departure times are fairly flexible, you are of course welcome to extend your stay either side by arrangement with the campsite.

DAYTIME VENUE

  • The venue for Saturday daytime and Sunday morning is about half a mile from the campsite.
  • It’s a beautiful venue and there are many options for shelter from the rain in the event of bad weather. It’s fairly basic in terms of facilities we will be able to use, but we thought that was a worthwhile trade off for increased Covid safety.
  • We have access to a composting toilet. There is a cafe nearby with flushing toilets which you would be able to use for the price of a cup of coffee if composting loos are a step too far!
  • The floor surfaces are solid and so we’ll need to bring boards for dancing, we will provide some but it would be useful to bring your own if possible.
  • Please take care moving about the venue as, being an outside venue, some of the surfaces are uneven.
